WLJ - Day 2 Activity 2

Activity 2: As an island nation, New Zealand is completely surrounded by water. It is the perfect place for people who like to swim or to sail! While in Dargaville, recovering from your busy day of sightseeing, you notice a number sailboats going by. One of the boats is manned by a young German girl named Laura Dekker. At the age of fourteen she sailed around the world the entire world by herself. You can watch a short video clip about her adventures here: Laura Dekker sailing trip.
Let’s imagine that you had the chance to interview Laura while in Dargaville. On your blog post five questions that you would ask her.
Questions for Laura Dekker!
  1. When did you first began to sail?
  2. What inspired you to sail?
  3. How long did it take you to sail across the world?
  4. If you didn't do sailing, what would be another hobby you would do?
  5. What is something something you really want?

Last year, the Prime Minister of New Zealand suggested that we should replace the flag with a new, updated design. He invited everyone in New Zealand to come up with their own flag design and submit it.
For this activity, it is your turn to design a new flag. Use any drawing programme that you wish. I would recommend the Flag Designer website. It allows you to create a flag in three easy steps. When you are done, take a screenshot of your flag and post it on your blog. Here is an example:

To earn full points you must describe the flag, in words, below the picture. Please tell us what is on the flag and what inspired your design.

Bonus Activity = 8 points

This flag inspired me by the way that New Zealand had different cultures. The cultures are Maori, Maori European, Asians and Pacific languages ( Tonga, Samoa, Fiji and more! ) I think this should be the flag New Zealand.

WLJ - Day 2

Day #2: New Zealand by Land and Sea
After a short ride through Auckland it is time to start exploring the rest of the country. Today you are going to venture around the north island of New Zealand to look at active volcanoes, gorgeous beaches, windswept coastline and lush, green bush. As a group, you will start at Rangitoto, the largest volcano in New Zealand before driving west to Karekare, a stunning beach on the outskirts of Auckland. You will finish the day by driving north to visit Tane Mahuta, the oldest living kauri tree in New Zealand.

Before you start writing, take a minute to read more about Rangitoto island, Karekare beach and Tane Mahuta.  On your blog, tell us which of the three places you most enjoyed visiting and why.
  • I enjoyed visiting…..

Tonga - The reason being is that in the summer, Tonga is very hot. I enjoy being in Tonga in summer because we drink/eat fresh coconut from the coconut tree. Also it is good to go out with your family to the beach since it is very hot!
Australia - I really enjoyed visiting Australia because the time was winter but it felt like spring! The sun was out on most days but some days the clouds were out. I really enjoyed it because I got to see my mum’s family in a different country for the first time!

Hamilton - I enjoy going to Hamilton because it’s a really long ride but it’s worth it afterwards! I also enjoy seeing different things in Hamilton ( sloped hills, so many hills you can see, amazing weather, the rivers and lakes are clean! ) They also have some animals roaming around the area. The ocean is clean and it’s perfect for a holiday!

Magic Math Market

Today Room 10 played a game call Magic Math Market . The game helped us learn more about fractions and decimals.

Activity 1:  Go to the Tourism New Zealand website and click on the ‘Facts - New Zealand People’ tab. Read about the people of New Zealand and then choose three interesting facts to post on your blog. The facts must be written in your own words. Do not simply copy and paste the facts from the website☺.

New Zealanders (Kiwis) love the outdoors

For most reasons most people from around the globe enjoy coming to New Zealand for the outdoors. The reason being is that they go for the amazing views from the mountains and landscapes!

Kiwis enjoy going on walks near the coastline and mostly fishing on wharfs! Most times kiwis love to  explore the mountains and lakes beautiful views!

The most adventurous kiwi from New Zealand is Sir Edmund Hillary! Sir Edmund conquered to reach the very summit of Mount Everest! The mountain is 8,848 m.  ( Tenzing Norgay also reached the very summit of Mount Everest)

New Zealand invented ‘Bungee jump’

Before creating farms and agreements, first they needed to clear the land, then made and very scary and terrifying activity! The person who invented bungee jumping was AJ Hackett from Queenstown.

To bungee jump kiwis needed to learn how to jump and know the hazards! They needed to be prepared to bungee jump and most kiwis became very skilled.

New Zealand

New Zealand has over 4.4 million kiwis living in the country! New Zealand has different cultures like Maori, Maori European, pacific islanders ( Tonga, Samoa, Fiji and more! ) and non pacific islanders!

¾ of the nation is living in the North Island! Also ⅓ of the nation is living in Auckland! The most cities that kiwis usually live in are Christchurch, Wellington, Hamilton and more!
